Albania has been a member of the WTO (World Trade Organization) since September 2000 and has implemented a non-discriminatory, transparent and liberal commercial policy. Albania does not apply any export tax or quantitative restrictions. Free trade agreements are one of the most important instruments for promoting exports by creating more liberal and preferential trading spaces compared to the most favored nation status. Albania currently has some free trade agreements in force and benefits preferential tariffs in its trade with European Union countries, CEFTA countries, EFTA countries and Turkey.
Developments in Albania's foreign trade are characterized by mainly growing trade flows, a fact which indicates an opening and intensification of trade exchanges of the Albanian economy and markets with world economies and markets. The opening levels for Albania have followed a constantly positive trend. Albania's trade volume in 2016 reached 822 billion ALL and the trade volume ratio to GDP reached 53.7%. Exports in 2016 amounted to 243 billion ALL and imports 579 billion ALL. The most exported products are minerals, clothing including footwear, aromatic and medicinal plants, processed fish products (anchovies), wood products, etc. The most important trading partners of the country are the European Union (67,8%), CEFTA countries (8,6%), Turkey (5,9%), China (6, 2%), United States of America (1, 5%), EFTA countries (1, 2%),, and other countries.
